How To Teach A Kindergarten Class The Importance Of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated throughout United States with joy and passion. First Thanksgiving brought Native American’s and Pilgrims together by sharing the harvest bounty and having meal together. To set the foundations right we should teach the importance of Thanksgiving to our kids. Kindergarten is an ideal place to teach the moral values and importance of Thanksgiving to young kids at very early stages of life. Children should be informed about the American Thanksgiving History using creative means i.e. videos, cartoon representations etc.

In this article I will explain how you can teach the importance of a Thanksgiving Day at kindergarten. You should teach why we celebrate the occasion by giving thanks with our friends and family members. Please leave me a comment and share your ideas about teaching the importance and history of Thanksgiving to young children at kindergarten.

Different people use different techniques to teach the importance of Thanksgiving. It doesn’t matter which method you choose; what matters is that you explain in a way which kids can understand and relate easily.

In order to explain Pilgrim’s voyage on Mayflower you can create a small boat in the center of your class by using a blue paper on the floor to represent water. It’s not important that you create an actual boat. You can ask the students to line up in such a way that they resemble a boat. Now, tell them story of pilgrim’s voyage on Mayflower.

In order to explain about crops you can provide them little amount of corn seeds, soil and plastic cups which will help them in gaining knowledge about harvest.

It is well said that kids learn stuff quickly if they do by their own. You can instruct them to collect various items involved with Thanksgiving Day. They can cut newspaper, magazines etc. and bring pictures of Pilgrims, Native Americans, Turkey and Apple Pie etc. These activities will surely help them in relating and understanding the basics of Thanksgiving Day.

If possible you can bake the cake in same style which was bake by Native Americans on their voyage. You can share the cake with the students and tell them stories about Native Americans voyage where they cook a cake.

Bring some Native American hats and feathers and distribute to each student. Now, tell them who were Native Americans and why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Bring lots of pictures of Thanksgiving Turkey and decorate your class room. If possible you can give a Thanksgiving Turkey feast to the class. Create a paper turkey and hang on the door of your class so every kid can see it and understand why we eat Turkey at Thanksgiving Day.
