Changing Trends Of Thanksgiving Meal - Thanksgiving History

It is believed that first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by Plymouth colonists in 1621. Historians believe that Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians worked together and shared their harvest with each other which founded the stone for Thanksgiving Day which is thoroughly in United States. Harvest meal shared by both has later become a very symbol of collaboration and communication between Native Americans and English colonists.

But it is well known fact that even before the arrival of Europeans in America tribal Native Americans were celebrating by sharing harvest with other tribal community i.e. Cherokee, Pueblo and Creek. They were sharing the bounty of crops with each other and celebrating by ritual dances etc. to keep the tradition alive and mark the celebration of thanks.

If we peek through the history books we will realize that Captain John Woodlief prayed and pledged “Thanksgiving” to god because they were able to travel long voyage across Atlantic safely. Scholars believe that this was the first Thanksgiving among the European settlers which is on record too. Nowadays, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated throughout America with lot of enthusiasm. People celebrate the even with friends and family members to thank god for giving meal to all.

With time Thanksgiving Day has seen a drastic change in menu and eating style. In this article i will elaborate what has changed with time. Please leave me a comment and share your knowledge about Thanksgiving history with us.

Early Seventeenth Century: In early seventeenth century people were not following any table manners they use their fingers and occasionally used spoons and knives. Moreover, they were not eating in course like we do now. Meat dishes, sweets and puddings were the main food at that time.

Role of Spices & Food: Like today many spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and ginger were used and it's not like English colonies bought the spices to the taste. There was no refrigerators so people use to dry the food in order to preserve.

Meal Time: English colonist use to eat big meal at noon which they called as noonmeat or dinner. At the end of the day they use to eat small meat whose leftovers would be eaten next day as breakfast. Major difference between English colonist and Native Americans was the timing. English colonists use to eat breakfast, dinner and finally supper whereas Native Americans ate whenever they feel hungry.
